How to Choose a Skateboard

Basics

First things First. Okay I just want to get this out of the way, If you have bought or are thinking of buying a skateboard from a big chain store like Walmart or Target........Don't. These skateboards are 100% horrible. As far as I see its just more wood for the fire place. These boards are made by cheap skateboarding brands that use bad materials to make there boards. Even though these boards are cheaper 20$ - 60$ they are not worth 1 cent. That being said it is important to realize that if you are some one that is serious about learning to skateboard you need to buy a good quality board. You need to be willing to pay anywhere from 80$-200$ for a board. If you are not willing to do so you are better off not even attempting to skateboard. I know this might seem a little pricey for a skateboard but the good thing is that the pros use the same skateboards so you know you'll be skating on the same kinds of boards that pros use.

Beginner Trick Skateboard

Step 1. First you need to decide what you want to buy. You can either buy a complete deck, a great board which will cost you less money or a custimized deck which can be a little better depending on how well you make it but will cost you more. I recommend that you buy a complete deck if this is the first skateboard your buying. I say this because they are plenty good for beginners yet alone advanced skaters and they save you the hassle of figuring out how to make a custimized deck correctly. Also a complete deck is ready to be used the second you purchase it but most custimized deck you have to assemble yourself which can be a big pain for some one who hasn't skateboarded before.

How to Choose a Skateboard

Step 2. If you decide to buy a complete deck your going to want to buy one online because the ones at stores aren't as good as the ones that you can find online.

Step 3. If you decide to buy a custimized deck, skateboard stores are good place to buy them but online skateboard stores are just as good because you'll have more options on board parts. When creating a custimized deck you should be aware of all the parts you will need. These consist of a deck, trucks, wheels, bearding, grip tape, hardware, and for some risers.

-The Deck. The deck is the most important part of the skateboard. Make sure that when buying a deck you buy a good quality one. There widths comes in many different sizes ranging mostly from 7.5-8.5. If you want to ride street buy a deck that is 7.5-8.0 and if you want to ride vert buy a deck which is 8.0- plus. If you have small feet a smaller board around 7.5-.7.7 would suite you well, while if you have larger feet a larger board around 7.8-8.0 would suite you well. Also keep in mind that smaller boards are better for flip tricks while bigger boards are more stable and are better for doing big tricks.

-The Trucks. The trucks are the second most important thing on a skateboard. When buying a trucks make sure its width corresponds with your deck for example. If you deck is 7.5 your trucks should be 7.5. You should buy trucks that are good for grinding and have a design that you like.

-Bearings. Bearings, allow you wheels to spin. They are ranked from 1-9. The higher the ranking the longer they last and spin. I recommend buying bearding with a rank 5 +. Nice bearing will allow your ride to last long, make you smoother, and faster.

-Wheels. Make sure when buying wheel that they are hard and small for street. Also smaller wheels are better for flip trick while larger wheels keep you more stable. Keep in mind that it your board will look better if the brand of the wheels are the same as the brand of the deck.

-Grip Tape. You can pretty much buy any grip and as you try different one you'll have preference which ones you like more

-Hardware.Hardware are the screws and bolts needed to assemble a skateboard and keep it together. It really doesn't matter what kind you get.

-Risers. Risers are used by some vert skateboarders. They allow you to get a little more pop on the board. They are optional.

Conclusion:

There are two different kinds of skateboards you can buy complete decks and custimized decks. Complete decks are very good and cheaper than custimized decks. Custimized decks are more expensive and can be better then complete decks if made properly. I would buy a complete deck online and a custimized one at a local skate store.

My Big Tip:

I recommend buying a complete deck if you are new at skateboarding. This is for several reason 1: they are cheaper, 2: they are made by experts at making skateboards and guaranteed to be good, 3: people that haven't skateboarded before haven't developed taste for what skateboard brands and styles they like better so making a good custimized deck that fits you well would be extremely tough. If you have already skateboarded quite some time you are probably ready to make a custimized board.

Trouble Shooting:
Question: I don't have any place close buy to buy a skateboard
Answer: You can use online stores. They are just as good if not better.

Question: I need help assembling my custimized board.
Answer: You can go to a local skate shop and they will assemble it for free or a small charge.
