Taming Finches - Training is Possible, But Must Be Handled With Care

It is hardly expected that finches can perform the same tricks that African Greys could. However, that is not always the case. Sure, many people got finches or canaries thinking that they are just there to provide beautiful melodies and beauty itself. But then with time and work, it is possible to actually tame a finch. That is right, someone has done it before. It is possible. Nevertheless, do not expect your finch to be riding a bike or doing a jump with a skateboard.

For the beginner tamers, the best type of finch that can be tamed is green singing finch. Some bird owners have shown that some finches would sleep in their shirt pockets and even responded to several commands. Now that may sound extremely impressive to some people at first, but with given time and patience you can teach your finch several commands too.

The first thing when it comes to training a finch is to understand that they originated from a different part of the world. Being always so close to nature, these small birds have to be quick, alert and react to any sudden movements. After all, being so small, it is only natural that they have to be quick to avoid getting caught by predators.

The key is to avoid sudden movements and use very low, calm voice. Avoid direct eye contact. Just spend several days in the vicinity of your finch until it gets used to having you around. If your finch decides to start eating, bathing and preening around you, then it means it is comfortable with you.

A finch generally finds its cage as the safest haven. Do not try to remove the finch right away or else it will be scared. Instead, slowly try to lead the finch out of the cage using a small perch. Make sure that the finch is comfortable and that the room is closed off to other places. You can also leave a perch near the outside of the cage so that eventually they will come outside of the cage. Now, if you want them to go back to the cage, use treats to lure them back into the finch cage.

You can even use treats as a way to try to get them to listen to your commands. For instance, if you make a certain call each time you give the finch a treat, then it might fly to you if you make the certain call after awhile. Remember though, you have to be consistent. A lack of consistency would confuse the bird and it might not listen to you.

Remember, treat your finch with care and be gentle and patience. The patience and gentle part cannot be stressed enough. If there is any sudden movement made to the finch that it felt danger, you would lose its trust and it would either take a long time or forever for the finch to regain the trust. They are quite fragile pets, so handle with care if you ever intend on taming them.
